Wouldn’t you know it? The neighbor who usually shares the ominous task of shoveling our common driveway was in Hawaii for this week’s ginormous snow dump. Besides the fact that I successfully turned my intense feelings of jealousy to ” Hey! I want to be in Hawaii in February!” I had to tackle the shoveling of not only the longest driveway in the world but also keep the sidewalks cleared of snow and ice for the many dogs and their people who use my sidewalk as a favorite walk. So here’s the crazy part of all of this: after owning this lovely oasis for over 20 years this is the very first year I actually figured out how to properly shovel, from using the right movements to knowing when to put the salt out (pet-safe, of course) to enjoying the pleasure of being in the body while connecting deeply with the snow faeries. I mean, really, snow is lovely – so beautiful, so soft, so quiet. Which is all to say that it’s never ever too late to learn to do something better, even if you’ve been doing it not so great for who knows how long and no matter what task you are doing, being happily in the moment of doing it, makes the whole experience a joy.
